One Of The Perks of Writing

Often, I find people are so caught up in the world and their work that they are unable to appreciate their environment. They rush to work, frazzle their brains, return back to their dwelling and repeat the cycle. Day after day. Always on a loop. That's why I think the perfect scene is New York.
"I'm in a New York State of Mind," as Billy Joel once said, and I can't stop smiling as I think of the city.
Frequently referred to as "The City That Never Sleeps," I'd be lying if I stated;"New York has absolutely nothing to do." And of course, being a truthful person, I like to share real opinions with others.
First of all, New York is one of the ideal cities for my favourite hobby: shopping. Picture any store. as you walk into said store in New York City, the employees snap their heads in your direction and race to be the second thing you see. After subsequently achieving their vitim (ie. you), they then proceed to ask you, "How are you?" in their strong American accents. What startles me most about this is not their voice or their animalistic approach to gaining a customer, its the fact that they seem genuinely interested to know you. Obviously I was pleased at the time, but it took me a while to get over my shock  and stammer a "F-f-fine."
Of course there are various other attractions, for example; The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Madison Square Gardens and Central Park to name a few. Do you really want to go to a place where all you see are sheep and tractors?
New York has allowed me to change my perception of cities. Yes, I see it as a fast-paced, industrial city but at the same time I realise that it can be relaxed. In a world full of media with materialistic views, the heart of New York City seems to be an anomaly in this twisted society. An anomaly that should be celebrated and looked up to. The heart of New York City is the "Heart of the World."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You're probably wondering: "What has the title got to do with New York?" Well, my lovelies, I'm about to tell you. You see, the task was to write about the "Ideal Holiday Destination" and because it was a timed piece that I wrote for school, naturally I panicked a little and the only city I could think of was New York City. Now, the shocking secret: I have never been to New York.
I know, I know, New York is on that list of cities to visit before you die but I'm having a bit of trouble persuading my dear mother to let us take a family trip there.
Bearing that in mind, you can see why I love writing. With writing, there's no right or wrong answer. Obviously there are some rules, e.g. commas, clauses, the "and I" rule, blahdy blahdy blah ... etc. but you can be as free as you'd like when you write.  A bit like painting a picture or composing music. The thing is, without even going to the city, I was able to imagine a city in my head. And no one can tell me that it's wrong because this is the New York City that I see in MY head. Whether the piece is good or bad is a different case and is entirely up to you, of course, but I see writing/drawing as a 3D form of your creativity and imagination. So one of the perks of writing is: the ability to be free and have your own opinion to be individual.
Again, thanks for reading, and leave me any feedback if you'd like!

My Three Favourite Relationships

After mentioning Monica and Chandler one of my other blog posts, I couldn't stop thinking about my favourite couples on television and the whole idea of love in general. The thing about TV couples is that everyone can see their relationship. Every part of their relationship is captured on the program and even if you don't know who these couples are, everything you need to know is one Google/Youtube search away!
(Note: These couples are not in order of preference. When it comes to "shipping" couples, it's often difficult to say which one is better than the other as they all have certain aspects that drew me to "ship" them in the first place.
In addition: A massive "Thank You" to Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, Melissa Joan Hart, Nate Richert, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan for playing their characters so incredibly well. There's no one else who can bring these couples to life the way they can.
Verb; To ship: Shipping, derived from the word relationship, is the belief that two characters, fictional or non-fictional, are (or will be, or should be) in a romantic relationship.)

So, on with couples!

1) Monica and Chandler (Friends) - These two first met after Monica's brother (Ross) brought his roomate from College home for Thanksgiving (Chandler). Thereafter, the two became friends and eventually after getting slightly tipsy, they..um...did "it" and fell in love. Their story is a lot more complicated than that, but I thought I'd just simplify it in order to keep some of the mystery left for those who don't know who they are. (And also to avoid writing 3 pages about their history). If you haven't watched "Friends" already, I ORDER you to go to your nearest HMV/amazon/ebay etc. immediately and pick up the whole ten seasons. Now.

Reason why I love these two so much: Friends first, relationship after. I think all the couples in this list were friends first and a couple later. Also, throughout their relationship and marriage, you can see them being themselves and accepting each other for who they are. For instance, Chandler is always telling these cheesy yet amazing jokes and it's evident he does this  just to see Monica smile. And Monica, although controlling most times, sees the good in Chandler and helps him during the period where he was unemployed. The main thing though, is that they're best friends. I mean, who better to marry than your best friend?

"My wife's an incredible woman. She's loving and devoted and caring. And don't tell her I said this but the woman's always right... I love my wife more than anything in this world. And it kills me that I can't give her a baby. I really want a kid. And when that day finally comes, I'll learn how to be a good dad. But my wife, she's already there. She's a mother without a baby..."
- Chandler about Monica

"We look at you, and we see you together, and it just, it fits, and you just know, it's going to last forever"
- Joey talking to Chandler and Monica

" You're not easygoing but you're passionate and that's good. And when you get upset about the little things, I think I'm pretty good at making you feel better about it."
- Chandler to Monica

Chandler: "Please promise me, that you will never leave me. That we will grow old together and be with each other for the rest of our lives."
Monica: "I promise."

2) Harvey and Sabrina (Sabrina The Teenage Witch) - I've never really believed in people marrying their high school sweetheart, but I think Harvey and Sabrina are the exception. I remember watching this with my mum when I was younger  and thinking that they were really cute friends.

The story: Sabrina starts at a new school where she meets Harvey. The two lock eyes and smile at each other but they don't actually manage to talk to each other until later in the day. They date for a while but after he finds out Sabrina is a witch, he breaks up with her. Later, when she is in college the two are just friends but Harvey soon regrets ending their relationship and wants her back. But, alas! Sabrina is getting married to a man that she doesn't love. Enter Harvey in his leather jacket and his motorcycle to whisk Sabrina away on horseback (motorback?).

Why they make it on this list: They are the only high school couple I have seen and believed to fit together. And although this would probably never occur in real life, he fully accepts Sabrina as a witch (even though he is VERY shocked by the news). While he was "friend-zoned" by Sabrina, he still looked out for her and it was clear since the beginning that these two had an incredibly special bond.  One of the things that I find very cute, is that often when Sabrina uses her magic, it's to help Harvey, even when they weren't dating and were in a fight.

3) Marshall and Lily (How I Met Your Mother) - the final perfect example of love.
The story: These two love birds met in college where Lily knocked on Marshall's door to ask him to help fix her stereo. From then on, the two were inseparable. Again, their story is a little bit complicated but nonetheless, very, very sweet. Now, Marshall and Lily have an adorable baby boy named Marvin.

Why I think they're amazing: These two are both rather weird and so naturally they seem the perfect match. Marshall is extremely tall (I think he's 6"4) and Lily is quite small ( I think around 5"2). Again, these two are best friends and I think one of my favourite episodes of How I Met Your Mother is their wedding. Throughout the episode, we see various things go wrong, one example is that Marshall gets a bad hair cut and so in a panic he shaves part of his hair off. But despite all the problems, these two tie the knot and have a beautiful wedding with just them and their 3 closest friends; Barney, Robin and Ted. They've been through so much together, that there's absolutely no one else that could compare to these two. I've said it before, but these two are so completely themselves around each other. They once even admitted to having farting competitions with each other. THAT is how comfortable they are with each other.

One word to sum up the perfect two: adorable.

"Lily: Oh my God! These pancakes are delicious!
Marshall: Yes! Thank you. I learned how to cook while you were gone this summer.
Lily: Wow! Do you want to cook dinner tonight?
Marshall: Yeah, sure...How about pancakes? "

“Lily, there are a million reasons why I love you. You make me laugh and you take care of me when I’m sick. You’re sweet, caring, and you even created an egg dish and named it after me… It’s called “Egg Marshall” and it’s awesome. But the main reason that I love you is that you’re my best friend, Lily. You’re the best friend I ever had.”
- Marshall to Lily

"Marshall, I love you because you’re funny and you make me feel loved and you make me feel safe. And for our anniversary you gave me a sweatshirt that says, “Lily and Marshall: Rockin’ It Since ‘96”… but the main reason I love you, Marshall Eriksen, is you make me happy. You make me happy all the time.”
- Lily to Marshall

"You know, there really are a million things I could tell you about Lily and Marshall, but really, the only thing you need to know is that ten years into their relationship, they still couldn’t spend a single night apart.”
- Ted about Lily and Marshall

Hope you enjoyed this fun little post! All my love x

An Adaptation of "Of Mice And Men"

(In the voice of Lennie Small)

I wusnt doin' nuthin rong. All I was doin' wus I wus heading down to dat, dem Market to meet George. That's when I saw her. Or she saw me. I'm konfuzing maself. She walked onto da trayn and sayt down next ta me, where I was sittin'. As she sayt down, I cud smell some naice perfume frum her so I looked at her and she looked back at me. She smiled. It maid me happy so den I smiled back but she had awready turned her hed.
She didunt see it but some of the faybric from her scirt was on ma leg so I reached out and touched it. It felt pretty. And it looked soft. I wanted to wrub ma faice on it. So I lowered ma head to ma nees and klosed my aies. It was real good - laike a small rabit wus kissin me. But den it wus gone. I looked bayk at dat preety girly but she was glarin at me. I thinke she hayted mey. That mayd me sayd so I started to crah. When I looked bayk at her she wus gone. George is gunna be real mad.

I'm beautiful. I mean, who would argue with me? I'm skinny and rich - what more could someone want? So it didn't surprise me when everyone was staring at me in my new three hundred dollar skirt. As I strode onto the train, one man was so overcome with my beauty that he snapped up and offered me his seat. Sitting down, I let my skirt flow onto my lap. I felt someone looking at me and noticed a large man beside me. He wasn't very attractive. He didn't say anything, just a dumb open mouthed expression on his dirty face. I smiled. the poor sould probably thought he had a chance with me. I don't date guys who have dirt on their face. Much less people who look like overgrown toddlers.
After a while I felt a small tug on my skirt and I looked over where i saw him rubbing his disgusting face with my brand new skirt. I was repulsed and disgusted and outraged and revolted and horrified. I guess he noticed my glare because he looked up and then he started to cry. Good. He deserved it.
I enjoyed listening to the overgrown toddler cry, but after a while I grew bored of his tears. I stalked out of the train and called my driver. If he hasn't had the car fixed yet, he is fired, because I am never taking public transport again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think "Of Mice and Men" (written by John Steinbeck) has become one of my favourite books after studying it in my English class. Now normally, I never really enjoy books studied in school as eventually I always grow tired of reading the same thing for five months. In addition to that, I spent so much of my time last year hoping that my teacher wouldn't pick on me that I never really paid attention to the book.
Make no mistake, I absolutely love English with a passion but sometimes there are certain texts/teachers/environments that further help you enjoy the subject - just my opinion.

For this piece, (which was actually a homework assignment) we had to write about an incident from the perspective of two different people. I thought I would challenge myself and write having been inspired by a text ACTUALLY STUDIED IN CLASS. (*shock horror*) To anyone who hasn't read "Of Mice and Men", I highly recommend that you pick up a copy from your local bookstore/library. And after reading said book, you can have the pleasure of watching the movie starring the brilliant actor Gary Sinise (CSI:NY) and John Malkovich. Both the book and movie are utterly brilliant and will be on the list of "100 Books/Movies to Read/Watch Before You Die."

As always, enjoy my readers and leave a comment if you'd like. Merci beaucoup!

Dear Saint Anthony...

Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony,
Please come around.
Something has been lost
and it cannot be found.

Poems are not my forté
but maybe this one will make you smile,
but what I'm going to tell you
makes me see myself as truly vile.

Something very dear to me
has unfortunately run away,
but please bring it back to me
to take my pain away.

I don't know if you heard my prayers.
I hope you can see this rhyme.
Agony controls my body
much worse than tasting a lime.

I wish I was lying
but far from it, sir.
This necklace was given to me,
by my beautiful mother.

I fear to tell her the truth,
after all where would I start?
But telling her this secret
I know would break her heart.

Her heart would shatter,
and mine would too.
Who could live feeling responsible
for making someone so blue?

It was in her possession
for some thirty years
and now I've lost a piece of her
No one can stop these tears.

How can I have lost it,
after only fifteen years?
To get my necklace back
I'll take all the mocks and jeers.

This is my public apology,
this is my public plea,
I'm writing this from the heart
for you Saint Anthony.

So please Saint Anthony,
please, please come around.
I'm on my knees begging you
to help my necklace be found.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wish I was lying so, so much when I tell you that yes, I have lost my necklace. I have been praying as often as I can to help find it but unfortunately I haven't had any luck yet. I'm not very good at writing poems but I thought an extra effort was needed for this piece.
Apologies if you're reading this and you're not a religious person, but I felt as if the best way for Saint Anthony to hear me is by a public message.
This necklace was very, very dear to me. It was my mother's necklaace which she received when she was born and she passed it to me when I was born. I wear this necklace everywhere I go as I feel safe when it is on me. My mother is my best friend and I love her with all my heart. The reason I haven't told her of my crime is because I know it will hurt her. If she is angry, I know I can take it but I don't know if I could cope if I'm the one who breaks her heart. I'm not trying to be selfish and trying to find this necklace for myself. I'm trying to get this back that she doesn't ever have to feel pain because of my stupid mistake.
What the necklace looks like: It is a thin gold chain with a small circular gold pendant. On the pendant is a carving of Mother Teresa holding the baby Jesus.
Please, if you're reading this and you can, please, please pray to Saint Anthony to help me find my necklace.

Thank you
